Motor and Propeller Performance Testing: The Beginning

Available performance data measure with custom thrust station and is not necessarily what is needed to make educated decision on which motor, propeller and battery size to pick for particular build. Even frame configuration is a big question: Quad, Hexa, Octo or any of coaxial types like Y6 or X8?

Motor manufacturers provide performance data only at certain conditions and they test their motors with their propellers and at combinations they think are good.

What if your build is different? What if you want to see how T-Motor Motor works with DJI propeller or vise versa?

To answer those and many more questions I built small testing machine and started to measure. Started with Multistart brand motors from Hobby King as have accumulated fair amount of them in different sizes.

As data was collected, it must put to work – be shared with other people to make use of it. How to present it in a way it’s valuable? Heh, that’s a challenge by itself.

These are results of measuring Trust of combination

Below is shown an example of data measured on thrust station for

  • Motor: Multistar 3508 640KV
  • Propeller: Master Airscrew MR08x45
  • ESC: HollyBro BLHeli32 35A

Each line represents voltage at which measurements were done.
